Design system

The colours, type, components and writing rules behind every page of this website, with the reasoning for each. Everything shown here is the real, working component. Turn on Inspect and hover over anything to see which styles it uses.

What the design system is for, the principles behind it, and where it is used.

What it is

A shared set of colours, type, spacing, components and writing rules that every page of this site is built from. It keeps the home page, the About page and each case study consistent, and a new page is faster to build because it starts from parts that already work.

FoundationsThe basic styles: colour, type, layout, spacing, corners, shadows, motion, icons and accessibility.
ComponentsThe parts shared across pages, with their states and how to use them.
WritingHow the site sounds, with examples of what to write and what to avoid.
DecisionsHow the system is kept up to date, what changed when, and the rules that came from real bugs.

Principles

Five ideas that decide the smaller choices. When two options both look fine, these pick between them.

Show the real thingReal screens, real photos, and numbers with a source. If something cannot be shown truthfully, it stays out. This is why the components on this page are working code, not pictures.
Say it plainlyHeadings say what a section is about, words are everyday words, and copy is reviewed as carefully as the design. This is why a heading reads "Our process" and not a clever phrase.
One accent per pageEach page has one accent colour and everything else is neutral, so the accent always points at something that matters. This is why diagrams use the accent and grey, never a second colour.
Readable for everyoneText passes contrast checks, anything you tap is at least 44 px, and every animation has a still version. This is why each accent comes in three shades.
Small moments of craftAt most one crafted interaction per section, and it has to explain something or delight, never distract. This is why the pixel hello is the only big animation on the home page.

Where it is used

Every page uses the same foundations and components. Case studies add their own accent colour and dark section colour on top.

In product teams

I have also worked inside a company design system. On Pathfinder at Automation Anywhere, I extended the existing design system library with new components for the learning experience: badges, certification cards, mission banners, leaderboard patterns and navigation elements.
